Can my dog catch my cold?

While the common cold can easily spread among people, dogs very rarely can catch a cold from their owners. However, dogs can have their own set of cold-like symptoms that can indicate various health conditions.

Understanding Different Cold Symptoms in Dogs

Cold symptoms in dogs can vary and may resemble those in humans. It’s important to understand the difference between a dog cold and more serious conditions like the dog flu or canine cough. By recognising the signs of a dog cold, you can provide appropriate care and seek veterinary attention when necessary.

Coughing

Coughing is a common symptom of a dog cold. It may be mild and intermittent or persistent and severe. If your dog has a persistent dry cough or coughs up phlegm, it could indicate a more serious condition. Immediate veterinary attention is advised in such cases.

Sneezing

Sneezing is another symptom that can occur in dogs with a cold. It is usually accompanied by a runny or congested nose. While sneezing alone may not be cause for concern, if your dog experiences persistent sneezing along with other symptoms, it may indicate a more severe infection or disease.

Watery Eyes

Watery or teary eyes can be a sign of a dog cold. If your dog’s eyes are excessively watery or have a pus-like discharge, it could be indicative of a more serious condition. Prompt veterinary attention is necessary to determine the underlying cause and provide appropriate treatment.

When do you need to see a vet?

While most dog colds are self-limiting and will resolve within 1-2 weeks, there are certain circumstances where veterinary care should be sought. If your dog experiences severe or worsening symptoms, such as those listed below, it is important to have them examined by a vet.

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Decreased eating or drinking
  • Bloody discharge from the mouth, nose, eyes, or rectum
  • Lethargy or acting unusual

Preventing and managing dog colds

Dog in bed in winter

To prevent your dog from becoming unwell this winter, there are several steps you can take. Firstly, keep your dog away from sick animals and ensure their vaccinations are up to date. This will help reduce the risk of respiratory diseases. Secondly, regularly wash your dog’s water and food bowls, as well as their toys, to prevent the spread of germs. Lastly, make sure your dog is on a balanced diet that supports their immune system, as this can aid in preventing and managing dog colds.

If your dog does develop cold symptoms, there are ways you can help them feel better. Start by providing them with a comfortable environment, such as a warm and cozy bed. Limit their physical activity to prevent further strain on their body. Additionally, try to avoid close contact with other dogs to reduce the spread of the illness. By following these steps, you can help reduce the severity and duration of your dog’s cold symptoms.
